A place that is lived, remembered and turned into a work of art.

Memory

Before us

La Granadella was lived in long before it became a project. This invitation begins with those who have looked after it.

Don Salvador Ginestar Soler

The house we now call Sea House came to us from Don Salvador Ginestar Soler. It grew out of decades of trust and of ties with the people of the place.

That is why we want to live it as a gesture of belonging, of respect and of continuity with the spirit of the place — and with gratitude to those who lived there before.

Matter

Álvaro Varela's way of seeing

Álvaro Varela studies the rock, the shoreline and the colour of the water. With relief, texture and resin, he builds his own way of looking at the coast.

He left engineering for art. Today he builds beaches in miniature: he shapes the terrain, places the vegetation and pours the resin that becomes the sea.

«If I belonged to a guild, I'd be more of a sculptor, right? A sculptor of rocks.»

Two ways of seeing, not a comparison: on the left, the place; on the right, the work.

The process

From terrain to resin. A fragment of the work, at real speed.

An awkward truth: I'm an artist, but I can't paint. I know a bit, like everyone. But I don't really paint well in 2D. In 3D, though, yes. In fact, look — I painted these Warhammer figures when I was 12 and I'm still surprised at how good they are. Though really, if I belonged to a guild, I'd be more of a sculptor, right? A sculptor of rocks. Or a gardener. Well, I'd have to be a resin-maker, really — that's where all this creating beaches began. Five years now. Blessed resin.

“My father says…” 33 s

My father says this is my best work. And don't think he hands out compliments, but the good thing is that when he says it, I know it comes from the heart. When I left engineering for art, he wasn't very convinced, so seeing him now absorbed in my pieces fills me with pride. He says that with these fields I've stepped up a level — it's his favourite part. And I'm not going to contradict him, because you'd better not. And well, Chelsea can't talk, but I think Chelsea agrees.

Dwelling

Sea House

Sea House stands on Calle del Tío Catalá, in La Granadella. It is Jessica Bataille's way of living in this place without erasing what was there before.

Walking barefoot to the beach, getting into the water and coming back home. Sharing that simplicity without erasing what came before. That is the intention of Sea House.

Jessica walks through the house and La Granadella, and tells what she wants to keep.

«It's a place where there is another kind of luxury.»
